In the production process and storage of abrasive products, it is essential to control and maintain optimal air temperature and humidity conditions.

An optimal “storage climate” guarantees that the abrasives can be used, without damage and deterioration of performance.

The ideal storage temperature is between about 18 and 22° C, with a relative humidity range of 45 – 65%. The effects of heat, direct humidity and/or solar radiation must be strictly avoided. Abrasives must be stored in the original packaging until use.

If the humidity in the air is too high, the substrate absorbs humidity and dilates.

The consequence is that the fiber disc becomes convex towards the grain side. Processing defects therefore arise, since in the abrasion process only the edges of the fiber discs touch the surface of the piece.

If, on the other hand, the air humidity is too low, the support loses moisture. The abrasive disc withdraws and forms a convexity towards the support side. The consequence is that the abrasive dries up and becomes breakable.

The shelf life of cutting and deburring discs is mainly determined by the level of humidity contained in them. Discs that are exposed to high humidity after production lose their original duration. On the other hand, if the discs are properly stored, the lifetime remains practically constant even for years. Discs directly exposed to water or steam become a safety risk.
